Rebels celebrate with V100.7

Tru Art Comes From Within Artshow

Congratulations to Rebel alumni Lou Chapman &
UW-Whitewater Warhawks for their WIN!
With 7:22 left in the national championship game, UW-Whitewater fans started their familiar chant of belief. Just minutes prior to that timeout, not many Warhawk fans were outwardly expressing any confidence.
Whitewater trailed, 47-29, with 14:43 to play and nothing appeared to be going the Warhawks’ way.
Leading scorer Chris Davis had just gathered in a defensive rebound, only to have the ball snatched from his hands and stuck in the hoop by Cavalier big man Jon Miller. Davis was whistled for a foul and had a look of disbelief at the way the game was progressing. He had two points, both free throws, at the time.
Davis and the Warhawk faithful had no reason to believe the game was about to change, but momentum is a fickle friend and it switched out of the Cabrini blue and donned the white uniform of the Warhawks the rest of the game.
Making UW-Whitewater, Division III NCAA Champions!

GROPPI Owls take 1st Place!
VFZ-Running Rebels was introduced to Groppi High School in November 2011 and upon arrival VFZ youth advisor Mr. Kevin Gaines noticed that Groppi had no athletic programs and he felt that the entire school would greatly benefit from having a basketball team. Kevin Gaines understands the importance of mentoring because he has been apart of the Running Rebels Community Organization since the age of 10 and was personally mentored and coached by Victor Barnett (Executive Director for the Running Rebels Community Organization). Mr. Gaines agreed to assemble and coach a team for Groppi High School. He entered the Groppi Boys Basketball Team (The Owls) into the PAC 8 Basketball League which was created for Milwaukee's Alternative High School Youth.
Although the boy's Groppi team lost their first two games, the team didn’t give up and went on to win their first championship on 2/16/2012 which was held at the Boys and Girls Club (1975 South 24th Street). The final score was Groppi 47 and Lynx 41. Many MPS staff, parents and VFZ staff members supported and cheered the Owls on to victory.
The win was amazing and I’m sure many of the young boys who won have never won anything in their entire lives. I am also sure that many of these young men have been constantly told that they would never amount to anything but I know that this win will give the young men a new found sense of confidence but most importantly will forever change their lives but also elevate Groppi's student school pride thus positively impacting Groppi’s overall school environment.
Our very own Riverwestcommunity was highlighted in a new TV series produced by Milwaukee Public Television, called "Aroundthe Corner". Our friend John McGivern, local actor/comedian, acts as host andvisits with many people whom you will know and love. If you missed the show here's the link to watch and enjoy!

Jacqueline Spence & P.O.W.E.R. Reading Program
When 2007-2008 District Report Card displaying that Milwaukee WKCE-CRT Proficiency Reading Scores for the 2007-20008 school year were at 38%, Jacqueline Spence (M.P.S. Educator and former Running Rebels Community Organization Education Specialist) knew something had to be done.
Spence worked hard to create andimplement the P.O.W.E.R. (Producing Optimal Wisdom Enhanced by Reading) Reading Program to encourage high school students to develop their reading skills, increase their reading assessment scores, enhance their 21st century communication skills by creating a personal Writer’s Notebook, as they simulate conversations depicted aroundreal-life issues with their Violence-Free Zone Youth Advisors, while enhancing a love for reading.
Spence’s work has not gone unnoticed. Jacqueline Spence is M.P.S. Central Office’s Teacher of the Year! Congratulations Jackie and thank you for all your hard work!
