When DeMarcus Harris heard that his and almost 400 other students’ college debt would be forgiven during his graduation from Morehouse College on Sunday, the Milwaukee native was so “shocked” that he felt practically “paralyzed.”
Billionaire Robert Smith announced he would repay the debt of all 2019 graduates during their graduation ceremony on Sunday in Atlanta at the historically black college for men.
“When he said that he would give the grant to pay off all of our loans, class of 2019, that was crazy,” Harris said. “Everyone around me jumped up and yelled. It was like somebody scored at a game. Like we were down and we scored.
“I did a little dance and started smacking high fives,” he said.
Harris graduated from Milwaukee’s Rufus King International High School in 2013.
